Great Ideas for Your Home

Change in landscape gave one Provo home a private area for hosting

The challenge of creating a private location in a yard that runs adjacent to a street can be challenging. However, a change of scenery and a couple of strategically placed bushes can go a long way, as these photos illustrate.

"We wanted to create a private extension of the house," says Karl Kuhni, owner of Kuhni Landscaping. "We wanted to give them another area to host that was outside of the house."

Kuhni and his crew took the yard, which started as a traditional lawn-filled landscape complete with a plain gray concrete walkway leading to a 10-foot by 10-foot patio, and turned it into something to show off and something to be proud of.

After tearing up the old grass, walkway and patio, Kuhni laid down paving stone that offered some color and interest to the ground. The pavers were arranged in a way that gave plenty for the eye to look at, culminating in a circular design for an outdoor dining set of chairs and table.

"The different pavers give you something to look at and follow," Kuhni says. "Within one pad you have a straight feel that changes to a circular one that mirrors the table."

A seating wall was added behind the table, offering additional informal seating areas, as well as another element of beauty.

To create the privacy, Kuhni added mounding behind the seating wall and filled the mounds with plants, trees and shrubs that could frame the area, giving it the feel of an outdoor "room."

"People are looking for reasons to spend time outside," Kuhni says. "Adding a nice area like this makes it fun to host."

Restructuring the watering system - including adding a drip system and more strategically placed sprinklers based on a flooding system - completed the project.

The two-week project included:
  • Cutting down on the amount of grass, and therefore, water use.

  • Providing sorely needed shade to the east side of the house.

  • Providing additional privacy from the adjacent road.

  • Additional points of interest.
