Great Ideas for Your Home

A nice painting can be enhanced with the right light. Here's how to light your masterpiece

The trick with highlighting a painting or other art object is to pick the right bulb," says John Clawson, president of Galaxie Lighting. "The type of light - whether recessed, surface mounted, or track lighting - is less important than the light source, or bulb."

Low voltage and halogen bulbs come in a variety of possible beam spreads and lumens (light output). Light bulb manufacturers and recessed fixture companies such as Juno and Halo print easy-to-use light bulb specification diagrams showing, for example, how bright a particular bulb will project at a certain distance, and how wide the beam spread will radiate. Using such charts, one can then "frame" the painting or other object with the particular bulb best suited to the distance between the object and the light fixture.
