New countertop option combines synthetic and stone
Kitchen countertops get abused. They must be able to stand up to
scalding heat and razer-sharp knives.
Countertops are traditionally made of either plastic products or
natural stone. Both surfaces come with drawbacks.
A new product called quartz is perhaps the most durable surface to
date.
Quartz is a combination of natural stone and a synthetic product
that combines to produce a product that is as close to a perfect
countertop as there is, according to Rachal Johnson, office manager at
Customform Countertops in Orem.
"Quartz is consistent in color. It is also dense and nonporous, with
no sealing required," Johnson says. "Quartz has excellent strength and
durability, and is heat-, scratch- and stain-resistant."
Quartz can be cut and fit to meet requirements with precision,
uniformity and consistency, according to Johnson.
Installers also have a less obvious seam in the finished product.
Quartz is becoming a favorite countertop material over natural stone
because natural stone may not be stain resistant and is more likely to
chip or crack.
Homeowners can expect quartz to be similarly priced to quality
granite.
